RUMOR ALERT: Spaceship Earth To Close For Two Years In Early 2020

“Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” and “Disneyland is not a museum” are some of Walt Disney and WDI’s famous quotes.  In a nutshell this means that when Mr. Disney and his team embarked on this great adventure no project was ever complete.  Even after Walt Disney’s death in 1966 this philosophy still holds true no matter what park, attraction, resort etc. that has the Walt Disney name attached to it.  With that said, there is a strong rumor floating around the internet this morning that the icon of Epcot Center, Spaceship Earth, will be going down for an over two year refurbishment starting in early 2020.

Spaceship Earth is said to be going down for a major refurbishment in early 2020 and won’t return until the parks 40th anniversary in 2022.  At this time there is no official word from Disney as to the complete truth to this rumor but it does fall in line with the larger plans to completely update Future World.  Rumors state that the entire inside of the famous geodesic dome will be completely gutted.  The track would be ultimately extended and the diorama segments would be updated.  Does this mean there will be a replacement for the current narrator, Judi Dench (2007 – current).  Judi Dench is the third narrator since the opening of Spaceship Earth in 1982 along with Jeremy Irons (1994-2007) and Walter Cronkite (1982-1994).

spaceship earth to close for refurbishment

The last major refurbishment of Spaceship Earth happened in July of 2007 with the addition of Judi Dench as the narrator, new scenes including the Greek classroom, mainframe computers and the creation of the personal computer and the re-imagined attraction vehicle (time machine).  This refurbishment happened over 10 years ago and only closed the attraction for seven months officially re-opening in February of 2008.

What does closing Spaceship Earth mean?  Well, it means that we will see an all-new updated version of this iconic attraction that fits with the upcoming updated feel of Future World and Epcot as a whole.   Walt Disney once said, “Progress is impossible without change.”  Words to live by.
